the land between the clouds

I saw it. I was in it! Just before the plane landed in Amsterdam, we went through ‘light turbulence’ and there we were. The orange and pink light shattering into pieces between the whitest, fluffiest clouds you have ever seen. It stretched out for ages. I wanted to stay for ages.

I’m at the airport now. (I ACTUALLY GOT TO SEE A DESERTED AIRPORT AT NIGHT!) I didn’t realise they turn the lights off at night. And all the restaurants are closed. People push benches together and sleep on their bags, dreaming in broken images. But who can sleep in such an other world?

Especially with vodka and a discovery of Frou Frou, Nico Muhly, and Maxim Gorky!

So, yes. There may be an economic downturn. Yes, I and many others may be effected by it. But really…who can complain when there are colour shattered clouds that you wish could last forever, and people to smile about as you move on to the next connection of life?! Even the news announcing the lastest road bomb or boat hijacking or stock market seem less frightening. It’s as if people can be terrible and vicious, but there is always, always a beautiful undercurrent of something. I don’t know what that something is…maybe it’s love or hope. Maybe it’s just the feeling that everything we do in life isn’t in vain. Maybe it’s the doubt that it’s anything other than vanity. But that’s the loveliness of it all! One never quite knows!
